Yongmunsa Jeongjiguksa Pagoda and Tombstone
Yongmunsa Jeongjiguksa Pagoda and Tombstone

icon Situated about 300m east of Yongmunsa is the dedicated monument of Jeongjiguksa¡¯s achievements. Jeongjiguksa (1324-1395) was a Buddhist monk during the latter part of the Goryeo Dynasty. His hometown was Jaeryung, Hwanghae-do and he received his education in Bejing, China. He entered nirvana during the 4th year of King Taejo¡¯s reign in the Joseon Dynasty, and so many brilliant relics came from his cremation that Taejo endowed him with his posthumous title ¡®Jeongjiguksa¡¯ (ïáòªÏÐÞÔ: honest and wise teacher for the nation) after hearing of this.
The pagoda and tombstone is about 80m apart. The pagoda was built by Joahn and the base and lower pedestals consist of 4 angles, whereas the higher pedestal and body are made of 8 angles, thus making a general appearance of being octagonal. There are lotus flowers carved into the lower and higher pedestals, and on the middle pedestral, which is shaped like a drum, there are no embellishments but only smooth curved lines. On the body a formal door shape is carved on one side. On the top surface of the roof stone, there is a prominently carved octagonal roofline, and on the end are flower decorations, but unlike customary form, they are involuted. On the very top is a lotus flower ornament.
The tombstone is a small-sized stone monument with the upper corners carved into a rounded shape as if the corners have been folded, and around the engraving there is a thin line. The epigraph was composed by a famous scholar at the time named Gweon Geun. At first it was set on a natural stone 20m below Jeongjiguksa Pagoda, but it fell out and rolling about the grounds when in 1970 it was set at the current location.
